The Secret to Getting the Perfect Fake Tan

So we’re officially that weird in between season where you can’t quite get a natural tan yet but you’re also starting to wear those cute floral dresses and skirts for the warmer weather. The worst part? When you’re still pasty white from the winter.

Don’t get us wrong, if you’ve been blessed with fair, alabaster skin - embrace it! But let’s be honest, there is nothing that a good tan doesn’t fix. But if you’re achieving the results without sun, it’s important that it’s done right or it can turn out pretty bad. Patchy, orange tans, anyone?

So we thought we’d round up 5 easy tips to getting that perfect (fake) glow.

Exfoliate

This is the golden rule in getting a golden glow. You absolutely have to scrub away the dead skin - and any previous tanning efforts - at least a day before you apply your new one. 24 hours is optimal timing for a good exfoliation (and shave) just so you give your pores time to close.

Remove old tan

If you’re an avid fake tanner, exfoliating alone might not do the job of removing your old tan thoroughly enough. The ModelCo Tan Remover Exfoliating Soap is like a two-in-one of steps 1 and 2 so you can make sure your skin is prepped and primed for the ultimate glow.

If you want to leave the hard work to the product then definitely use Bondi Sands amazing Self-Tan Eraser, which is simply a foam that your apply to your skin and leave for five minutes.

Moisturise

Some tanning products will tell you not to moisturise beforehand but that is a mistake. Even though you just exfoliated yesterday, you won’t be getting the most out of your fake tan mousse if you’re applying onto flaky skin. For those with dry skin, you should slather some Inecto Coconut Body Lotion  everywhere you plan to tan. For those blessed with smoother skin - or those of us who don’t take scalding hot showers - you should still moisturise any dry areas like elbows, knees, ankles and feet. Let it soak into your skin and you can move onto the next step.

Pro tip: DO NOT use a body oil - before or after - your fake tan because it won’t stay on the skin and will run the colour.

Choose the right tan formula for you

We’re massive fans of the tried and tested mousse - who can go past Bondi Sands’ award-winning, holy grail, Kylie-Jenner approved Self Tanning Dark Foam? It’s easy to apply - their tanning mitt is a revelation - and it’s not messy at all! But we get it, it’s not for everyone.

Maybe you do prefer a mist that can provide you instant glow and is easy to control for use on the face. The ModelCo Tan Airbrush In A Can might be the answer to your prayers thanks to its quick drying colour and instant colour formula. Another quick fix is a Self Tan Dry Body Oil or a Instant Tan Self-Tan Lotion, which both provide almost instant colour but also act as extra hydration to make sure that your skin stays nourished.

Pro Tip: A great option for tanning your face is the revolutionary Minetan Micellar Water Everyday Glow Self Tanner. Put some on your palms and evenly pat into your face in place of moisturiser to build or maintain a glow.

Maintenance

While a really good tan should last you 7-10 days - and if you followed all the steps above - there are ways to prolong it. Thanks to all the gradual tanners and moisturiser combos on the market, you can apply your daily dose of hydration while still upkeeping that glow. The b.tan Gradual Tan Daily Moisturiser is infused with coconut oil to keep your skin silky smooth and will gradually build a golden tan.
