Everything You Need To Know About Thinning Hair

I’m assuming you’ve come across this page because you have thin hair, you’re experiencing hair thinning or maybe you’re just curious. First things first, let us just say, you’re not alone! When you start to notice strands of hair on the floor, on your pillow, in the shower drain and all over your clothes it’s easy to go straight into panic mode BUT it’s normal! Annoying, yes, but completely normal.

We’ve enlisted an expert, Andrea Bryceland, National Education Manager at Kérastase who shared with us all you need to know about everything you need to know about thinning hair, why it happens, how you can prevent it and what product you need.

Why is my hair thinning?

There are many reasons your hair could be thinning…it could be hair that is falling from the root area or due to a weakened fibre, or a combination of both. Some factors that contribute to your hair falling from the root area are stress, diet, hormones or medication. Some factors that could cause the hair fibre to become weakened are colour services, repeated styling or heat tools without protection.

What are some signs of thinning hair?

It could be as simple as noticing you hair doesn’t feel as abundant. You may notice more hair in the shower plug or on the bathroom floor after you have blow-dried your hair. It could even be that you notice hair on the pillow when you wake up in the morning.

How to stop thinning hair?

This will depend on the factors causing the hair fall. If the hair is falling from the root area the use of products that will anchor the hair fibre into the scalp and stimulate the hair growth are advised. If the hair is falling due to a weakened fibre then using products that will strengthen and fortify the hair are the best option. If the hair fall due to a combination of both scalp and fibre concerns then using a product or collection of products that will treat both are a must. The key ingredients in the Genesis Collection target both factors associated with hair fall. The Aminexil in both the Genesis Serum and Genesis Ampoules helps to anchor the hair more solidly into the scalp whilst the Edelweiss and Ginger Root protect the hair fibre.

How to regrow thinning hair?

It is normal lose between 50 to 100 hairs a day from the scalp, anything more than that would be considered excessive hair fall or hair loss. If you are experiencing excessive hair fall or hair loss the first thing we need to do is make sure the excess fall is stopped by anchoring those hairs into the scalp. The use of products that will further minimise hair fall and provide an optimal environment for future growth are strongly advised.

What should my haircare routine look like eg. Avoid heat appliances, use silk scruchies etc.

You should treat your hair as gently as you can – using the correct products that are prescribed to suit your hair and scalp. Bathe/shampoo your hair twice, first to cleanse then to treat. Always gently towel dry the hair before applying a care product/conditioner/masque this will prevent the product from being diluted, comb through with a wide tooth comb or a brush suitable for wet hair. Don’t be too vigorous when you are towel drying your hair. If using a hairdryer or heat tools, use products that offer heat protection. Use a night serum on your hair whenever possible such as the Nutritive 8H Magic Night Serum or the Blond Absolu Cicanuit, like a night serum for your skin this is another opportunity to ensure your hair receiving the nutrients it requires and your hair is kept in optimum condition.

Ways to style thinning hair and what products to use

Anything that will add more volume by creating the look or feel of abundance is great for thinning hair. However, it is important to make sure we are protecting the hair when we are styling. The Genesis Defense Thermique offers heat protection up to 230 degrees.
