Products Recommended For Your Hair Type

If you're a beauty lover, you'll probably know that we all have different skin types (e.g. dry, oily or combination) that need to be taken care of with the right products. Well, our hair is exactly the same! There are six different hair types, including fine, dry, frizzy, blonde, coloured and damaged. In this blog, we'll be taking a look at what 'hair type' actually means, how to tell which hair type you have, and how to care for your specific hair type with the right products.

What is my hair type?

Your hair type is determined by both your genetics and the way you treat your hair day-to-day. Figuring out which hair type you have can be easy if your hair is damaged or coloured, but if you're not sure whether you have dry or oily hair, you'll need to do a bit of detective work. If your hair becomes greasy very fast after washing it (usually the next day), you likely have an oily hair type. If your hair generally looks lifeless, dull and frizzy, you probably have dry hair. No hair type is better or worse than the others and each hair type will require different products, styling techniques and cuts to look its very best. Most of the time, our bad hair days are caused by using the wrong products and techniques to care for our hair, which is easily rectified!

How to care for each hair type

Fine

Fine hair is the most delicate and fragile hair type. It may be soft to touch, but if you fail to care for it properly, it can be prone to breakage, stretching and other issues. By using a volumising shampoo, you can plump up your hair at the roots and add a hit of nutrition to any lacklustre strands. Using volumising styling products like the Pureology On the Rise Root Lift is also a great idea, but it's advised for you to use a clarifying shampoo approximately once a week to remove any build-up and leave your hair feeling bouncy, full and clean.

Dry

If your scalp doesn't produce enough oil to hydrate the strands of your hair, leaving it brittle and frizzy, you probably have dry hair. One of the best ways to add a hit of moisture back into your hair is to wash your hair less often (try once or twice a week) and use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. The Schwarzkopf Moisture Kick Shampoo is a great product for dry hair as it contains hyaluronic acid, which is designed to penetrate the hair and return it to optimum moisture levels.

Frizzy

Frizzy hair is usually dry hair, so moisturising your locks properly is key to keeping them under control. Start by using a moisturising shampoo, then apply a hair mask and leave it in your hair for about 10 minutes to allow it to soak in. Once you're out of the shower and your hair is still wet, add a nourishing oil or serum to protect your hair from becoming frizzy. Anyone with frizzy hair will know that a humid climate can make things far worse. However, by using a styling product like the KMS Anti-Humidity Seal, you can lock in your hair's style and preventing from getting out of control!

Blonde

Keeping your blonde hair looking bright and vibrant requires a little bit of love and care. If you bleach your hair every time you go to the salon, your stunning cool blonde colour will likely turn brassy after a few washes. To keep your blonde looking fresh, you can apply the Moroccanoil Purple Shampoo, which is designed to neutralise any orange tones in your hair and keep it looking great between salon visits. Adding a purple hair mask to your routine is also a good idea, and if you use heat styling products on your hair, be sure to use a heat protectant, as bleached hair is prone to breakage.

Coloured

To keep your coloured hair looking fresh, smooth and shiny, you'll need to be extra careful about how you take care of it. Simply put, the more often you shampoo your hair, the faster your colour will fade. Try to cut down the number of times you wash your hair per week and apply a dry shampoo when it gets a little too oily. To make your haircare routine easier, the Schwarzkopf Color Freeze Duo comes with a shampoo and conditioner specially designed for coloured hair, so you can keep things simple.

Damaged

If your hair has been damaged by frequent heat styling or bleaching, you'll need to be extra gentle with it. Washing your hair with lukewarm water rather than hot water is a great start, but you also need to make sure you're using a shampoo and conditioner that's specially designed to keep your hair strong. Before you shampoo your hair, comb through it first to get rid of any tangles that could cause damage, and use a t-shirt instead of a towel to dry your hair once you've finished. A protective hair mask like the Joico Defy Damaged Quad will also work wonders on your hair. Leave it to sit for a minimum of 5 minutes and it will start to rebuild any broken hair bonds and replenish your hair without weighing it down.
