What does toner do for your skin? Quick guide

Whether you’re skincare obsessed or you’re new to the whole thing, you’ve probably come across toners at some point or another. You might have even tried a few because your sister or best friend swears by them. But what does toner do for your skin and is it really a must-have in your skincare routine?

In short, yes! Toners can be a bit of a grey area for some, but we’re here to guide you on the path to toner enlightenment. We’ve also picked out a few of our favourite toners, which you definitely need to try. Want to learn more? Keep on reading.

Overview:

What exactly is toner?

Think of a toner as a second step to the cleansing process. It’s used to remove any dirt, oil and makeup left over from cleansing and it has a similar consistency to water.

In the past, toners have gotten a bad rap. As they were predominantly made for those with oily or acne-prone skin, early toners were formulated to be very astringent. This means they had high concentrations of alcohol and were very drying. Thankfully, toners have had a bit of a glow-up (thanks to the popularity of the Korean beauty 10-step skincare routine) and the ones on the market now actually contain a variety of soothing, brightening and anti-ageing ingredients.

Instead of stripping your skin, this new gen of toners are nourishing and can be used as a primer to the rest of your skincare (we’ll explain more later). They can even be used by those with sensitive skin!

Okay, so we know what a toner is, but what does toner do for your skin? Is it worth the hype? See below 👇.

So what does toner do for your skin, really?

As we’ve already mentioned, a toner can help to remove dead skin cells, oil, dirt and gunk from your skin. This not only helps with acne and congested pores, but can leave your skin looking super glowy and reduce the appearance of post-inflammatory pigmentation (acne scars)! Over time, this will improve your skin tone.

On top of this, a toner can help to balance the pH level of your skin and enable your other skin care products to penetrate more deeply. This is why a toner is like a primer for your skin! Since it removes any impurities that linger after cleansing, you’re left with a super clean base and your other products can then work their magic.

Where does it fit into your skincare routine?

A face toner is best used right after cleansing, before all your serums, moisturisers and oils. Remember: a toner doesn’t replace a cleanser, so you still need to cleanse your face first!

Like anything though, make sure you’re introducing this skincare product gradually into your routine. Try using it once every few days, and then you can slowly build it up.

Can toner be used as moisturiser?

Nope! While there are toners that are super hydrating, you still need to finish off your routine with a moisturiser.

Can I apply night cream after toner?

Absolutely! You can use a toner in the AM and PM, and the toner will actually help your night cream to penetrate deeper into your skin.

How to use toner

Using a toner is super simple! After cleansing, soak a cotton ball or cotton pad in the toner of your choice. Lightly sweep it across your skin (face, neck and decolletage) and allow it to air dry.

If you want to forgo the cotton ball or pad, just put a few drops of the toner into your hands and press them into your face.
